The waist to hip ratio is used to help predict an individuals risk of disease such as metabolic disorders, diabetes and heart disease. It’s a guideline that many insurance companies and doctors use.
In general people with more weight around their waist tend to have a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes. For men, if you have a WHR of 1.0+ you are at a high risk and for females .85+ is considered a high risk.
